CIVIL SOCIETY WROTE AN OPEN LETTER TO UNGA IN SUPPORT OF AMB. KYAW TUN

 

On 10 September, 350+ Civil Society Organisations called on the members of the UN General Assembly to retain Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun’s accreditation as Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the UN. The AJC members Asia Justice and Rights, Burma Human Rights Network, Fortify Rights, Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, Global Justice Centre were among the signatories.

CPJ –ICJ WEBINAR SERIES: SESSION 2 – ‘IMPUNITY & ACCOUNTABILITY IN MYANMAR’

 

On 13 September, the Refugee Studies Unit at Centre of Peace and Justice (CPJ-BRAC) and the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) held the second session of its webinar series. The session supported by the Asia Justice Coalition was addressed by Mr. Kingsley Abbott on Impunity & Accountability in Myanmar. The recording of the event is available here.

LAW REQUESTS ICC PROSECUTOR TO ACCEPT NUG DECLARATION

 

On 15 September, Legal Action Worldwide announced that it has submitted a communication to the International Criminal Court in partnership with Debevoise & Plimpton LLP. The communication calls upon the Prosecutor to accept the National Unity Government’s declaration granting the ICC jurisdiction as the legitimate representative of Myanmar under international law.

 

FORTIFY RIGHTS CALLS ON SECRETARY BLINKEN TO RECOGNISE GENOCIDE IN MYANMAR

 

On 22 September, Mr. John Quinley III and Matthew Smith wrote an op-ed for The Hill, calling on State Secretary Antony Blinken to recognise genocide in Myanmar.           

BHRN WEBINAR

 

On 14 September, Burma Human Rights Network co-organised a panel discussion on 'Myanmar: The Challenges Ahead'. The event saw participation from Mr. Kyaw Win (BHRN), and the UN Special Rapporteur on Myanmar, Tom Andrews amongst others. The webinar deliberated on the various ways the international community and UN mechanisms can contribute towards the protection of human rights in Myanmar.

 

 

HRW: A MONTH-LONG EXHIBITION IN PARIS ON #WHATSHAPPENINGINMYANMAR

 

Human Rights Watch co-sponsored a month-long exhibition at the Place du Palais Royal, Paris called ‘Fighting Fear’. The exhibition kickstarted on 18 September and will be open till mid-October. It showcases a unique selection of 14 artworks by 7 Burmese artists.

GCR2P ORGANISED 13th ANNUAL UNGA MINISTERIAL MEETING ON RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT

 

On 20 September, the Global Centre for Responsibility to Protect, co-hosted a Ministerial-level meeting on the Responsibility to Protect and the Women, Peace and Security agenda. The meeting was be moderated by Ms. Savita Pawnday, incoming Executive Director, GCR2P. To watch the recorded session, click here.

 

ICJ CALLS ON STATES TO SUPPORT IIMM

 

On 13 September, the International Commission of Jurists released a press statement welcoming the third annual report of the IIMM and called on States before the Human Rights Council to support the work of the IIMM and to actively identify possible fora for legal proceedings to help facilitate justice for the people of Myanmar.

GJC: GENDER AND GENOCIDE CONFERENCE

 

On 20-21 September, the Newslines Institute organised a two-day Gender and Genocide Conference. It saw the participation of Akila Radhakrishnan (President, Global Justice Center) on How Gender Shapes Genocide and Grant Shubin (Legal Director GJC) on Gender Analysis of Contemporary Genocides. REUTERS: U.S. COURT ORDERS FACEBOOK TO RELEASE RECORDS OF ANTI-ROHINGYA CONTENT FOR GENOCIDE CASE

 

On 22 September, Reuters reported that a U.S District Court has ordered Facebook to release records of accounts connected to anti-Rohingya mass atrocities in Myanmar. The judge criticized Facebook for failing to hand over information used against the Rohingya. Read the complete order here.

 

UN SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR FOR MYANMAR PRESENTS HIS UPDATE TO THE HRC

 

On 22 September, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, presented his oral update to the Human Rights Council. He told the Council that conditions in Myanmar following the 1 February military coup have worsened and urged a “change of course” to avert further human rights abuses and deaths. OHCHR SUBMITS ITS WRITTEN REPORT AND ORAL UPDATE ON MYANMAR TO UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

 

On 16 September, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights  submitted its written report on Myanmar to the Human Rights Council. It was followed by an oral update by Michelle Bachelet on 23 September. According to her, "the human rights situation in Myanmar has deteriorated significantly as the far-reaching impacts of the military coup continue to devastate lives and hopes across the country.”

 

UN: REGRET THE LACK OF WILL FOR A PEACEFUL SOLUTION BY THE MILITARY

 

On 14 September, the UN Special Envoy of Secretary-General, Christine Schraner Burgener, expressed her dismay at the refusal by the military to have an all-inclusive dialogue in the interests of the people.

HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL: IIMM PRESENTED ITS THIRD ANNUAL REPORT

 

On 13 September, Mr. Nicholas Koumjian, Head of the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar presented its third annual report to the 48th UN Human Rights Council. According to the Mechanism, the attacks against the civilian population are both widespread and systematic in nature and constitute crimes against humanity. The full statement can be read here.

 

ICC PROSECUTOR APPOINTS 17 SPECIAL ADVISERS

 

On 17 September, Mr. Karim A.A. Khan QC, the newly elected Prosecutor of the ICC appointed 17 eminent experts to serve as his Special Advisers.

UNSG SUBMITS HIS ANNUAL REPORT ON ROHINGYA & MYANMAR TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

On 28 September, the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, submitted his new report on the Situation of human rights of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar to the UNGA. The report also focuses on the country’s democratic transition and the disruption of that process in the wake of the military takeover, on 1 February 2021, by the country’s armed forces, or Tatmadaw.
